"Today my phone died. There will be no reception."

[She hasn't checked in after school yet. He has these steaks, four of them for just the two of them, and no Ellie in sight. He's been pacing in and around the house for half an hour now before he gives her phone a ring.]

Ellie? You alright?

[ 15 minutes later: ]

Hey, yeah. You?

Where the hell you been? I been waitin on you at home.

[He sounds angry, to anyone but her and possibly Tommy it would sound as if he were unreasonably so. She knows him better, he's worried. She should be safe in this town, at least, but he can't help it. He's spent too long and invested too much of himself in her not to worry at even the smallest change in plans.]

I was checking the wall. Making sure it's secure.

[Why is she texting him? Does she have to be quiet suddenly for some reason? Now he's even more worried.]

Ellie, there are folks assigned to that, and you for sure as hell ain't one of them. I expected you home and that means you either get your ass back home or you let me know you're changin' our plans.

Where are you now?

I know. I cleared it with Maria. I just felt like I had to do it.

I'm on my way now.

Alright. We'll talk about it when you get here.

[Joel hangs up, upset and worried and angry. He can understand if she wants some space but it isn't fair to him for her to disappear without letting him know.]

Hey, Ellie.

Are you coming over tonight or not? I'm thinking pizza. I know we did pizza last week but cheese. You understand.

Yeah, B.Y.O.C. I swear to god you took a layer of cheese off when I went to the bathroom.
