Canon: The Last of Us
Canon Point: End game
Age: 15
History:
Ellie was born five to six years after the fungal pandemic that swept across the world and demolished a great number of the human population. Her mother died leaving Ellie in Marlene's care (though behind the scene)- a close friend of Anna, Ellie's mother - and she was brought up in an oppressive military Quarantine Zone in Massachusetts. At 13 years of age Ellie arrived at a military prep school where she meets Riley, another teenager at the school, and the two of them eventually become good friends.
During an outing from the school Ellie is capture by the Fireflies - a revolutionary militia group - where she finally meets Marlene and learns about her mother. She obtains a letter handwritten by Anna and a switchblade that belonged to her - which is the blade she has throughout TLoU game.
Riley leaves Ellie for six weeks, in endeavors of her own to join the Fireflies, and shows up to take Ellie on another outing from the school, forbidden as it was, Ellie takes the risk and sneaks out with Riley. Their outing is purely designed for a sort of truths, a peace offering, from Riley due to her abandonment done to Ellie. This is the significant outing that Ellie and Riley share their first kiss and then shortly after are overpowered by the infected (those who have the fungal disease) and in the end of their fight are both infected through bite wounds obtained through the battle.
Riley is killed due to the natural processes of the infection (either she is killed before or after she "turns" is not determined), Ellie is left surviving with only a bite mark and some agitations of the fungi on her skin in the immediate proximity of her bite. Afterward Marlene takes in Ellie and together they plan on heading to the head quarters of a research facility for the Fireflies; a hospital in which perhaps they can engineer a cure from Ellie's immunity to the infection she carries.
This is when Ellie comes across Joel and Tess who were tasked - or bartered - with smuggling Ellie outside of the quarantine zone. Marlene is left behind, due to an injury she received looking for her first option smuggler: Robert. While leaving the Quarantine Zone Tess and Joel find out Ellie was bitten by an infected three weeks ago but is immune to the fungi's destructive deterioration and transformation. When the group reaches the Capitol Building they find the group of Fireflies they were meeting have been killed. Outside the Capitol Building the military group pulls up and Tess lays down her life to buy Joel and Ellie time to escape. This will be the second character Ellie witnesses (or one could speculate whether or not she witnessed the death of Riley.. but considering my interpretation of Ellie I believe she would have been there with Rile at her passing) dies due to the infection she is immune to.
At this time Joel and Ellie are alone and he ventures forward with a plan to bring her to his brother, Tommy, who use to be in cohorts with the Fireflies. They pass through a town manned by an old aquaintance/business associate of Joel's where they obtain a truck to get them on their way. They were ambushed by hunters entering Pittsburgh and while in that town they come across two travelers who also share intentions of meeting up with the Fireflies. Henry, 25, and his younger brother Sam, 13, join up with Joel and Ellie and the group continue their journey for the Fireflies. During a fight Sam becomes infected and turns over night into what is described as the first stage a "Runner". Sam attacks Ellie and is killed by Henry who then turns and shoots himself, committing suicide. Two more dead before Ellie due to the infection.
After this Joel and Ellie reach Jackson County where they meet up with Tommy. It becomes evident that Joel plans on abandoning Ellie with Tommy to carry out the rest of the mission. Ellie commandeers a horse and runs away to a nearby farm ranch. Joel and Tommy find her there and an argument ensues between Joel and Ellie where she also reveals that she knows about Joel's daughter: Sarah. Afterward Joel decides to continue the mission of delivering Ellie to the Fireflies and they head to the University of Eastern Colorado where they believe they are.
They find the University empty save for infected and hunters. During a fight with the hunters Joel is inflicted with a serious impalement to his abdomen which left Ellie to fight their way free and to get Joel to safety. During Joel's bed-ridden injury Ellie stitches him up and protects their hideout while he heals. During one of Ellie's hunts she comes across David, the leader of various hunter groups Joel and Ellie killed through their travels - such as the one at the University of Eastern Colorado. Ellie is tailed by David and in fear of the hunters finding Joel out of commission she lures them away from their hideout. She is eventually captured by David and taken to his community up in the snowy mountains. It is there that she sees the horror of what lies in the core this community: cannibalism. In captivity Ellie is hostile and defiant toward David, biting him and breaking his finger. Ellie escapes nearly being butchered by claiming that she is infected and now so is David due to her biting him. This gives her the opportunity of escaping and she runs through the village in attempts to make her way back to Joel.
David traps Ellie inside a restaurant and locks her inside of the building instigating a fight for her freedom. Ellie partakes in a cat and mouse fight, stabbing David in the back several times until she gains the upper hand that soon turns into a melee between them. They both momentarily fall unconscious and when they come to David has the upper hand but Ellie reaches David's fallen machete and begins to hack at him until she is stopped by Joel who pulls her off the very dead David.
Joel and Ellie reach Salt Lake City, Utah, where their travels have led them through clues as to where the Fireflies had moved to. While traveling an underground tunnel Ellie and Joel get swept up in a flood where she drowns. She was saved by members of the Fireflies tracking Joel and Ellie's presence in the city. Both Joel and Ellie are brought to the hospital they were trying to get to. Ellie is immediately prepped for surgery when she arrives, and does not gain consciousness until she is on the road with Joel -- driving away from the hospital. In her time of unconsciousness Joel retrieves her from the surgery table, saving her life at the cost of finding a possible cure. Joel explains that she wasn't necessary for finding a cure anymore and that she's in fact not unique to this immunity, that there are many others like herself and none of them did any good for engineering a cure.
While on their way to Tommy's town, Ellie tells Joel of Riley - the first to die - then asks Joel to swear to her that he was being honest about the Fireflies, to which he does.
Personality:
Ellie displays strong traits of naïveté , maturity, experience, innovation, self-preservation, and insecurity. She also can be kind, compasionate, sensitive, as well as defiant and silly.
Through her behavior she advocates for being self-efficient by actions and by telling those around her that she can "take care of herself." While this may be true in some situations it's not necessarily the most honest of her convictions. Ellie is quite afraid of being abandoned, or being left alone in any way, form, or fashion. After Ellie finds out that Joel is going to "dump" her on Tommy she runs away to the abandoned ranch house and is later found by Joel who she escalates into an argument and reveals her anguish over losing people by either being left by them or by them dying. At this point of time she's been with Joel for quite some time and in that time together they have lost Tess, Henry, and Sam -- and the fear of Joel leaving Ellie is unbearable. She shows here a good example of defiance, theft (stealing one of Tommy's horses), recklessness through her act of going off in a dangerous world by herself under a frantic and unclear mind (rashness, impulsiveness, and temperamental), and immaturity of selfishness. Although she knows Joel is by no means bound to her, responsible for her, she still needs for him to commit to her as a guardian and/or friend she still has that child-like expectancy that he will continue to fulfill his role in her life. A desperation is seen here from her to connect with this person, Joel, for their time and effort together to be more than a "mission".
With that being said, Ellie is a loyal friend to those who she does make friends with as the act of making friends for Ellie is indeed difficult. This is supported by the fact that her first good friend is Riley and also in a conversation between the two Riley asks how Ellie's gang of friends were and Ellie responds with: "They're your friends.. not mine." Ellie is the type of girl that focuses all of her effort and attention to one friend at a time. This is seen in the game by the fact that Riley was her single friend and even after Riley left her for a long period of time Ellie did not accumulate any other friend to take Riley's place. Further in the game you see her slowly forming a bond with Joel and he becomes that single friend in which she will be loyal to and keep. There were many other opportunities for her to make friends or to leave Joel behind, but she didn't and she wouldn't. This is seen by his near fatal injury from the University of Eastern Colorado where she fights for his life, drags him to safety, protects their hideout, and risks her life to draw the enemy away from Joel who is bid-ridden to the extent of out of commission. During Joel's healing process and her nursing him, she could have befriended David and his community of hunters and though it may have been a smart, tactful, and a self-preservation move she didn't because of her loyalty to Joel. Also, she could have stayed with Tommy and Maria at the time Joel had planned on leaving her there, but she fought against that plan because Joel was far too important to her and the concept of being with someone new was terrifying to her.
Ellie is witty, sarcastic, sassy, and clever. She loves -absolutely- loves a good joke and a terrible pun. I believe this is a good combination between a coping mechanism and the fact that she still is young and naive. Rather than the gloom and doom all around her she likes to lighten the mood with some good jokes or light conversations. After a long hard day of running for your life and gore with decay for the environment there's nothing like a good laugh or else you risk sinking deep down by the gravity of the world. Although this silliness can be tamed given the circumstances of a situation; Sam asks her if she's afraid and she jokes about being afraid of scorpions but his negative response to her making light of the conversation is something she can detect and soon gives him an honest answer of being afraid ending up by herself.
Ellie has a tendency to pick up and keep sentimental objects / or just objects she wants for one reason or another: Riley's Firefly pendant, her mother's artifacts, Sam's toy, Bill's dirty magazine (a magazine she stole just to spite Bill -- in my opinion), etc. This is a significant point to make being the condition of her world and how room in one's backpack is precious and for her to fill it with items that are not life-preserving (food, medicine, weapons) is something to say about her desire to keep a hold of sentimental objects from people she's known in her life.
Abilities/Skills: Please give a brief summary of your characters abilities and skills. Since there is no power cap, please do not attempt to break the game.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Ellie is skilled in a fight and weaponry including creating bombs and explosives. She is able to work around her fear in high stressful situations in order to survive. Though it is not to be mistaken for fearlessness -- as she has many reasons to be afraid.
She does not trust easily, but in her world that may be seen as a strength as people in her world are of desperate character to survive harsh environments. Another weakness may be that the world before the outbreak is hard to imagine/envision/understand and may be a source of awkward relating to adults that came from the world before the outbreak.
This being said, another weakness may very well be that her sense of naïveté was taken from her at a young age and in place of her childhood was a time of training and preparation for the harsh world ahead of her. Thus, she may exhibit some signs of immaturity that derive from an unnatural rushed process of development through her childhood years. Examples of this would be her defiance for authority, lewd jokes, and destructive play: breaking windows, tagging walls, stealing.
Items:
Mother's letter
Switchblade
Walkman
Riley's Pendant
Pistol 9mm
Appearance:
Ellie has auburn hair that reaches near her shoulder blades, green eyes, pale-peach pink skin, lots of freckles, scar to right eyebrow, full lips, thin build but with muscle (due to her lifestyle), she's about 5'3, looks like a teenager with remaining child/baby-like features such as a roundness to her cheeks, doey eyed (at times), straight teeth - white. On another note, she does express some interest in becoming more femine by asking the question whether or not her breasts will come to full -- thus unsatisfyingly small-chested.
