Character InformationCharacter Name: Ellie
Canon: The Last of Us PS4 game.
Canon Point: End game.
History: wikiPersonality:
Ellie displays strong traits of naïveté , maturity, experience, innovation, self-preservation, and insecurity. She also can be kind, compassionate, sensitive, as well as defiant and silly.
Through her behavior she advocates for being self-efficient by actions and by telling those around her that she can "take care of herself." While this may be true in some situations it's not necessarily the most honest of her convictions. Ellie is quite afraid of being abandoned, or being left alone in any way, form, or fashion. After Ellie finds out that Joel is going to "dump" her on Tommy she runs away to the abandoned ranch house and is later found by Joel who she escalates into an argument and reveals her anguish over losing people by either being left by them or by them dying. At this point of time she's been with Joel for quite some time and in that time together they have lost Tess, Henry, and Sam -- and the fear of Joel leaving Ellie is unbearable. She shows here a good example of defiance, theft (stealing one of Tommy's horses), recklessness through her act of going off in a dangerous world by herself under a frantic and unclear mind (rashness, impulsiveness, and temperamental), and immaturity of selfishness. Although she knows Joel is by no means bound to her, responsible for her, she still needs for him to commit to her as a guardian and/or friend she still has that child-like expectancy that he will continue to fulfill his role in her life. A desperation is seen here from her to connect with this person, Joel, for their time and effort together to be more than a "mission".
With that being said, Ellie is a loyal friend to those who she does make friends with as the act of making friends for Ellie is indeed difficult. This is supported by the fact that her first good friend is Riley and also in a conversation between the two Riley asks how Ellie's gang of friends were and Ellie responds with: "They're your friends.. not mine." Ellie is the type of girl that focuses all of her effort and attention to one friend at a time. This is seen in the game by the fact that Riley was her single friend and even after Riley left her for a long period of time Ellie did not accumulate any other friend to take Riley's place. Further in the game you see her slowly forming a bond with Joel and he becomes that single friend in which she will be loyal to and keep. There were many other opportunities for her to make friends or to leave Joel behind, but she didn't and she wouldn't. This is seen by his near fatal injury from the University of Eastern Colorado where she fights for his life, drags him to safety, protects their hideout, and risks her life to draw the enemy away from Joel who is bid-ridden to the extent of out of commission. During Joel's healing process and her nursing him, she could have befriended David and his community of hunters and though it may have been a smart, tactful, and a self-preservation move she didn't because of her loyalty to Joel. Also, she could have stayed with Tommy and Maria at the time Joel had planned on leaving her there, but she fought against that plan because Joel was far too important to her and the concept of being with someone new was terrifying to her.
"Everyone I have cared for has either died or left me. Everyone -fucking except for you! So don't tell me I would be safer with somebody else, because the truth is I would just be more scared."
Ellie is witty, sarcastic, sassy, and clever. She loves -absolutely- loves a good joke and a terrible pun. I believe this is a good combination between a coping mechanism and the fact that she still is young and naive. Rather than the gloom and doom all around her she likes to lighten the mood with some good jokes or light conversations. After a long hard day of running for your life and gore with decay for the environment there's nothing like a good laugh or else you risk sinking deep down by the gravity of the world. Although this silliness can be tamed given the circumstances of a situation; Sam asks her if she's afraid and she jokes about being afraid of scorpions but his negative response to her making light of the conversation is something she can detect and soon gives him an honest answer of being afraid ending up by herself.
Ellie has a tendency to pick up and keep sentimental objects / or just objects she wants for one reason or another: Riley's Firefly pendant, her mother's artifacts, Sam's toy, Bill's dirty magazine (a magazine she stole just to spite Bill -- in my opinion), etc. This is a significant point to make being the condition of her world and how room in one's backpack is precious and for her to fill it with items that are not life-preserving (food, medicine, weapons) is something to say about her desire to keep a hold of sentimental objects from people she's known in her life.

Riley's Pendant
Pistol 9mmAbilities: Ellie is an excellent fighter, even against physically larger targets. She has keen tactical skills in shooting with guns both short and long range, a bow and arrow. She also has knowledge in making smoke and nail bombs, Molativ Cocktails, and rigging some useful melee weapons. Her main weapon of choice, however, is her switchblade. Ellie is skilled in stealth techniques when facing a much larger target as she cannot over power them with her small build.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Strengths: Ellie is immune to a deadly fungus that has swept her world--first of any known immune person. This, however a strength, is also a weakness in her world because it makes her life that much more valuable --- as much as her
death for the name of science in producing a cure from studying her immunity. This being important to note because of the psychological endurance Ellie experienced through having survived when so many people around her died.
Ellie is generally even tempered but can blow up during highly agitating situations. She has runaway from loved ones before, closed herself off from them and kept herself distant in times where emotion was too great to bear. However she is open enough to learn from these experiences and can find better ways to address problems or uncomfortable situations.
Weaknesses: Ellie cannot swim and has in fact drowned in her more recent past. As mentioned above, Ellie does have a much smaller build for facing the enemies she's had to in her cannon. She can easily become over powered and taken if she is not first careful to strike
fatally first.
A weakness of Ellie's is the fact that she has been known to act irrationally and rash before, putting herself in danger and those she cares about in danger. Part of this behavior is due to the fact that she is young and the other part of this behavior is due to the environmental factors of her life. Ellie comes from a kill or be killed world where actions we consider to be crimes are actions considered to be
survival actions to those in her world. Emotional relationships are still a common factor in Ellie's world but surviving and self-preservation actions are most predominant to this society.

[ The video feature flickers to life and there's but a brief second before Ellie is seen fumbling the device and soon she sets it down before she slightly anchors her top half down a bit--trying to fit in frame. ]
Hey--hey, there's this weird smell that's been around the well lately. Callous won't drink the water anymore either. It stinks.. almost like ... [ Shit.. what's it called? ] Sulfur..? Anyway.. I drew some of the water today and it came out looking red. I think there's a problem..
I remember reading something.. a while back, something about how mining in nearby caves can affect the nearby water supplies? Um.. the water channels? I don't think this is going to be good for us. We're going to have to find another resource soon.
[ She straightens up, walks forward, and then picks up her device before she walks off toward the subject of her communication. ]
Look.. [ She aims the camera to the bucket of water she pulled up from the well. ] So, it's something to do with mining or someone killed over in there. It stinks something awful and either way it's not drinkable at the moment..
Prose Log Sample:She told herself that this uncomfortable feeling wasn't anything to worry about, that it would pass, that she may even be overreacting. However, it was difficult to reason through the emotions. In Tommy's town they were at least safe, fortified, and strong in numbers. Everyone had a role -- Maria, Tommy, Silvia, the rest of the adults, Joel included, had roles. Ellie's role was to be a kid again.
With the rest of the kids. But they weren't like her nor would they really like her. Even if she tried she knew it was superficial at best. None of them had been through what she's been through. Though she wouldn't deny that times were frightening for them, especially if there was the threat or actual breech of the walls that kept the bad guys out. It just didn't compare, not to her, not to the extent and depth of horror she had endured with Joel, that she had survived with Joel.
He was trying to push her into this life, into this normalcy and she was more afraid of it then she was willing to admit. It was a long time since she didn't sleep with one of her eyes open, even that she didn't go to sleep afraid of whether or not she was going to wake up in the morning with a knife to her throat.
Normalcy failed in comparison and there was no acclimating to this routine of school, friends, play, and repeat.
By the time she got to their front door she was feeling unbearably anxious again. Though the good part of her knew he understood, the stubborn and emotional part of her became upset all over again at his endeavor to normalize her.
We're shitty people, Joel.. it's always been that way.
No. We are survivors.
A long ago conversation came to mind and Ellie brought her hands up to bother with her fingers in front of her before she took in a breath and pushed back her bangs to behind her ears. When she opened the door she found Joel immediately and her heart skipped a beat at the sight of him.
He knew, he alone knew. She told herself. Ellie was sure he too knew that threat of fleeting peace -- which made it even less peaceful. Ellie shut the door behind her and lowered her backpack beside it. Rather than it being filled mostly of school supplies it was filled more with survival gear just because Ellie was still waiting for that day they would pick up and run.
